De eerste Portugese Jezuïten zijn inmiddels tot in China doorgedrongen en met succes bekeren zij burgers en autoriteiten. De auteur beschrijft op een respect afdwingende wijze de val van de Mingdynastie. Hoofdpersoon is de jonge Engelsman Francis Arrowsmith, een verbannen Jezuït. Van zijn aanvankelijke bedoeling zeer snel zijn fortuin te maken om dan weer naar zijn geboorteland terug te keren, komt weinig terecht. Zijn verblijf in China zal ruim dertig jaar duren. Na zijn aankomst in China weet Francis zich al snel bemind te maken bij de Portugese kolonie in Macao onder leidng van de vreesaanjagende Miguel Texeira Correa.
