This book, by the American Foster Stockwell, is about the status of the five religions practiced in China today and points to places of religious interest for the tourist. China, the birthplace of Taoism, is also a land of many other religions. Some, imported from elsewhere, were profoundly changed by their contact with Chinese culture. Buddhism thus developed unique Chinese sects and movements, and today has the largest following in China. During the Tang dynasty, there was a thriving Jewish settlement, and during the Yuan dynasty Muslims ruled this vast land. Jesuit Catholics were advisers to the emperor in the 1500s and Protestants set up many noted schools and hospitals after 1807.
