Een korrelige video-opname laat een man zien die zijn pistool tegen het hoofd van een bankmedewerkster zet. De vrouw wordt gesommeerd de kluis binnen 25 seconden te openen. Wanneer de overvaller zijn geld niet op tijd krijgt, schiet hij de vrouw neer. Harry Hole wordt op de zaak gezet en hij komt flink onder druk te staan als de overvaller nogmaals toeslaat. As they investigate the case, Harry grapples with his suspicions about Tom's involvement in arms smuggling and the death of his partner, all while trying to maintain his precarious position in the police force.
