Quando ci s'inoltra in un territorio, non tanto ignoto quanto anche semplicemente nuovo o non del tutto conosciuto, ci si rifornisce di cartine, guide e dizionari, in modo da affrontare ben attrezzati l'esperienza, e non correre il rischio di perdersi, girare a vuoto, non comprendere pienamente lingua, caratteri, usi e costumi. Tanto più se questo territorio invece che essere reale è totalmente immaginario, ma di un tipo di immaginazione che è andata nel corso degli anni così ben strutturandosi, precisandosi, moltiplicandosi, grazie anche al contributo di chi la recepiva e ne fruiva, da diventare qualcosa di simile a una pseudorealtà: è quanto è avvenuto per la Terra di Mezzo di J.R.R. Tolkien. E se qualcosa esiste, anche soltanto a livello di credenza generalizzata, ancorché sul piano della fantasia e del senso simbolico, ebbene allora è proprio necessario che vi sia anche uno strumento che ci aiuti a muoverci, a destreggiarci. Tolkien" che è un po' tutto insieme una guida, un vocabolario e un beadecker, in cui si alternano in ordine alfabetico brevi 'voci' e interventi più ampi, veri e propri piccoli saggi, dedicati ad argomenti generali o a personaggi significativi.
