Set against the backdrop of the diamond-rich Griqualand in South Africa, Victor Cyprien, a French engineer, is determined to win the heart of Alice, the daughter of landowner Mr. Watkins. Faced with competition from wealthier suitors, he initially works a diamond claim but is inspired by Alice to return to his chemistry roots. His successful synthesis of a 243-carat diamond, "The Star of the South," leads to a thrilling quest when the diamond is stolen, prompting Victor and three rivals to embark on a journey across South Africa to recover it.
