Die »Kinder- und Hausmärchen« der Brüder Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm, erstmals erschienen in zwei Bänden 1812 und 1815, gehören zum unvergänglichen Schatz der Weltliteratur. Przetłumaczone na ponad 160 języków, jest jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych dzieł niemieckiej kultury, obok Biblii Lutra. Niniejsza dwutomowa edycja opiera się na kanonicznym zbiorze z 1857 roku, a jej tłumaczeniem oraz posłowiem zajęła się Eliza Pieciul-Karmińska. Dzięki jej pracy, baśnie te zostały uwolnione od dydaktyzmu i patyny czasu, oferując nową jakość. Ilustracje do zbioru stworzył Otto Ubbelohde, niemiecki artysta związany z secesją, znany z pejzaży i martwych natur. Jego prace przyczyniły się do wzrostu popularności baśni braci Grimm, które inspirowały pisarzy, kompozytorów oraz twórców filmowych. Baśnie te są obecne w ludowej mądrości, ukazując cnoty wierności, empatii i odwagi, w opozycji do pychy, egoizmu i zawiści. Der vorliegende Titel ist der letzte Band, der mit ihren Original-Illustrationen erschienen ist. Sämtliche ursprünglichen Originale wurden bei der Bombardierung von Leipzig verbrannt und mussten unter in der Nachkriegszeit technisch äusserst schwierigen Bedingungen komplett neu erstellt werden.
