This revised standard for object database management systems serves as a crucial guide to emerging trends in object-oriented and database technology. It reflects a significant industry consensus on component technology for database products and languages, facilitating the widespread adoption of object database technology. ODMG 2.0 aims to achieve what SQL did for relational databases by ensuring application portability across various platforms and products. The standard seeks to merge programming languages with database systems into a unified environment, enhancing performance and enabling more robust representations for complex database applications. ODMG 2.0 builds on related efforts from ANSI SQL92 and the OMG Object Model and Interface Definition Language.
