The dentist was found with a blackened hole below his right temple. A pistol lay on the floor near his outflung right hand. Later, one of his patients was found dead from a lethal dose of local anaesthetic. A clear case of murder and suicide. But why would a dentist commit a crime in the middle of a busy day of appointments?

Shortly after marrying an attractive young widow, Gordon Cloade is killed by a bomb blast in the blitz. The former Mrs Underhay is now in sole possession of the family fortune. Poirot is approched by Gordon's sister in law claiming that Mrs Underhay's first husband is still alive.

At the Jolly Roger Hotel the guests appear to be relaxing in the sun. But when a beautiful woman is killed, there are many possible suspects. What can the motive be? Is there evil at work on the island? By chance, the great detective, Hercule Poirot is also a guest. Can he solve the mystery?
