観音様へお参りするとパノラマや凌雲閣や花屋敷を見て、と谷崎が幼いときから親しんだ浅草、東京の大衆娯楽地として活況を呈した浅草。浅草公園に集う画家や歌唄いたちが、民衆芸術の可能性を追究して芸術論をたたかわせる。「襤褸の光」「鮫人」、随筆「浅草公園」の三篇を収める。

「金と銀」「AとBの話」「友田と松永の話」を収める。天才は金、能才は銀、芸術的素質において金の青野と銀の大川。Aは善の、Bは悪の文学者。また友田と松永は西洋と東洋との対立として描かれ、常に芸術の高みをめざす人間の、内に省みて葛藤、照応する二重性に焦点をあてた作品三篇。

徳川の治世、荒涼とした那須野ヶ原の夕暮れ、敵討ちの旅にあるお国と従者五平、虚無僧姿の敵友之丞、サスペンス性を帯びた三人の関係。単なる仇討劇に留まらず、人間の愛欲と悲哀が赤裸々に描かれた「お国と五平」ほか、二十四篇の戯曲作品のうち「恋を知る頃」「恐怖時代」「白狐の湯」「無明と愛染」の四篇を収める。
