Mario Vargas Llosa, geboren 1936 in Arequipa/Peru, studierte Geistes- und Rechtswissenschaften in Lima und Madrid. Während seines Studiums begann er, für verschiedene Zeitschriften zu schreiben und veröffentlichte erste Erzählungen. 1963 erschien sein erster Roman. Der peruanische Romanautor und Essayist ist als politischer Autor bekannt und hat auch international großen Erfolg. Zu seinen bedeutendsten Werken zählen mehrere Romane, die sich mit gesellschaftlichen und politischen Themen auseinandersetzen. Vargas Llosa ist Ehrendoktor mehrerer Universitäten in Amerika und Europa und hat Gastprofessuren an renommierten Institutionen wie Harvard und Oxford gehalten. 1990 kandidierte er für die oppositionelle Frente Democrático (FREDEMO) bei den peruanischen Präsidentschaftswahlen, unterlag jedoch in der Stichwahl und zog sich danach aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Er erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, darunter den Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels 1996 und den Nobelpreis für Literatur 2010. Heute lebt er in Madrid und Lima. Elke Wehr, geboren 1946 in Bautzen und verstorben 2008 in Berlin, studierte Romanistik und konzentrierte sich auf die Übersetzung spanischer und lateinamerikanischer Prosa ins Deutsche. Sie lebte in Madrid und Berlin.
