Ivan Kozarac was a Croatian novelist, poet, and short story writer whose work is characterized by its almost documentary depiction of life in Slavonia following the reintegration of the Military Frontier. He critically examined themes of corruption, the pursuit of fashion, and superficial piety, yet his deep love for his native land shines through in every piece. His most renowned novel captures the traditions of the Šokadija region with remarkable fidelity.
