The challenges of industrialization, including biodiversity loss, climate change, and deteriorating health conditions—particularly in developing nations—are escalating. This underscores the urgent need for integrated solutions to promote sustainable development. In response, the United Nations has established the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” which officially commenced on January 1, 2016, introducing 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that encompass sustainable economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. The Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals addresses these SDGs in a comprehensive manner across 17 volumes, each dedicated to one goal. This particular volume focuses on SDG 3: "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages," providing a detailed exploration of relevant terms to enhance understanding and knowledge. Promoting health and well-being is crucial for sustainable development. Progress has been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing child and maternal mortality. Access to clean water and sanitation has improved, and significant strides have been made against diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, polio, and HIV/AIDS. Nevertheless, continued efforts are essential to eradicate various diseases and tackle persistent and emerging health challenges.
