Essays on Access and Transformation in Remote Rural Economies

This thesis comprises four self-contained essays. Market access and agricultural intensification: Remotely-sensed evidence from Mozambican river crossings characterizes regions where agricultural intensification is held back by unreliable market access. Remotely-sensed market activity as a real-time economic indicator in rural areas of developing countries presents a satellite-based method to map rural marketplaces and track their activity in real-time. Rural marketplaces and local development explores how marketplaces in Kenya shape local economies and how they interact with other transport infrastructure. Weather shocks, mortality, and adaptation: Experimental evidence from Uganda shows that community-based healthcare can mitigate adverse health consequences of climate change.
