Fifty Years of the UIS: 1965-2015
    • A preliminary version of this history was developed over six years by the author, who meticulously gathered historical data about the international Union of Speleology (UIS) from scattered references and the memories of past members. After organizing this information into a coherent draft, he sought feedback from knowledgeable UIS members, leading to the creation of this book. It begins with an overview of organized speleology's origins and traces its international development, detailing the founding of the UIS and the documents that guide its work, along with its relationships with similar organizations. One chapter focuses on the International Congresses of Speleology, which were pivotal in establishing the UIS. Another chapter outlines the various departments, commissions, and working groups that facilitate international speleology. Five chapters highlight the past presidents and general secretaries, sharing their perspectives, objectives, and challenges during their tenures. The final chapter reveals behind-the-scenes stories from former UIS members, many of which have not been previously documented. All chapters have been updated with contributions from those who provided their memories, and numerous photos have been included. The title has also been revised to honor the UIS's 50th anniversary.
