Sustainable economic and social development increasingly relies on good governance, security, and the absence of armed conflict. Conversely, preventing conflicts and enhancing national and human security necessitates economic and social development alongside effective governance. Therefore, development aid must focus on conflict prevention, management, and resolution in recipient countries to bolster national security and improve individual security for their populations. Traditional development studies should incorporate security and conflict dimensions, while security studies must move beyond Euro-centric biases to address the more intense and numerous conflicts in the developing world. These themes were explored during a doctoral training course at Aalborg Air Base in May 2004, and this book aims to share the seminar's findings. It includes presentations on various topics, such as the transition from terrorism to human security in Africa, the political economy of intra-state war, the implications of failing states, conflict responses in Africa, and the relationship between water, security, and conflict.
