Diana Holman-Hunt

Clocktower Paperbacks: My Grandmothers and I
    • Born on October 25, 1913, in the same bed where Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt passed away, Diana Holman-Hunt inherited her grandfather's remarkable storytelling abilities. Her extraordinary upbringing, vividly captured in her first book, showcased her experiences as an unwanted only child. With a father working in Burma, she was shuffled between her affluent Freeman grandparents in Sussex and the eccentric Edith Holman-Hunt in Kensington. Resourceful and brave, she learned that adult affection depended on her ability to entertain, often being urged to share stories, particularly about her grandfather and the Victorian art world. Although she fulfilled this role, she eventually grew weary of her grandmother's glorification of the painter. Diana's writing talents blossomed later in life, independent of formal education. From ages eight to fourteen, she attended a subpar boarding school in Eastbourne, later continuing her studies in Florence, Germany, and at an art school in Paris. The unexpected death of her grandmother in 1931 left Diana with nothing in her will. Her first book became a bestseller shortly after the death of her second husband from cancer in 1959. She was in the process of writing her autobiography when she passed away on August 10, 1993.
