Thomas Strauss

    April 4, 1931 – May 28, 2013

Tomáš Štrauss is an undisputed authority on Eastern European avant-gardes, their histories, and intellectual contexts. Since the 1970s, he has published insightful analyses of developments beyond national borders. He critically examined the one-sidedness of a major Western art exhibition in 1981, proposing 'Ostkunst' as a complementary and organic artistic movement. Even in his later years, Štrauss retains a vibrant idealism, championing the Enlightenment potential of modern aesthetics and its deep connection to philosophy and science. He believes in the future of art that actively investigates and contemplates, offering a thought-provoking provocation to the art world.
