The God of the Old Testament can shock readers of the Bible: he drowns his creation in the flood, requires Abraham to sacrifice his son, destroys the first-born of the Egyptians the night before the exodus, and ruthlessly eliminates the Israelites who were devoted to the worship of the golden calf. Throughout the centuries, many Christians and philosophers have rejected all or part of the Old Testament because of these divine characteristics that violently contrast with the image of the good and kind God of the New Testament. So can we believe in a God who is macho, cruel, despotic, or who even indulges in ethnic cleansing? Thomas Römer puts forward a reinterpretation of these difficult passages in the light of the most recent research into the Old Testament. For the author, the characteristics that God appears to have, and that at first seem repulsive, are aimed at preserving the faith from dogmatic complacency by instilling in mankind the unexpected vision of a God who is engaged with the real life of humanity. This work is a widely revised and augmented reissue of the older version that was published in 1996. It includes a new chapter: Is God sanctimonious and are human beings sinners? Book jacket.

Operative hysteroscopy represents an important extension of operative gynaecology. The benefits of this endoscopic technique, however, are balanced by its high demands on the operator. It requires excellent knowledge of safety issues and possible complications. This book acts as guide and resource for the practical acquisition of this technique. This new edition is distinguished by the large number of improved color illustrations and incorporation of the newest scientific findings.

"The diagnostics of bleeding disorders and causes of sterility is a problem in the daily gynecological practice. Here the diagnostic hysteroscopy enlarges the scope of diagnostics, especially since with the adequate experience it may be carried out as an outpatient procedure and so many patients are spared a hospital stay." "In the diagnostics of bleeding disorders hysteroscopy bridges the diagnostic gap between vaginalsonography and curettage and improves the diagnostics and the staging of endometrium carcinomas." "In the diagnostics of sterility it is superior to vaginalsonography and hysterosalpingography in many aspects." "The hysteroscopic guide shall help the gynaecologists in practice and clinic to make themselves familiar with the diagnostic hysteroscopy." "For the acquisition of the method and the correct assessment of the findings the numerous colour-figures should be especially helpful." "The hysteroscopic guide has been composed for the beginner and shall contribute to the establishment of the method as a standard in gynaecology."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
