Aubrey Beardsley

    August 21, 1872 – March 16, 1898

    Aubrey Beardsley was an English illustrator and author whose black ink drawings, influenced by Japanese woodcuts, emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. A leading figure in the Aesthetic movement, he championed art for art's sake. Beardsley significantly contributed to the development of the Art Nouveau style and the poster movement with his unique and provocative visual language. Despite his brief career, his intense creative output left a lasting impact on visual art.
