Sigurbjörn je architekt s velkými sny. Na jaře roku 1953 věnuje všechen čas plánování prvního obchodního domu na Islandu. Od svého tchána získá pozemek v Reykjavíku a společně se svým přítelem tesařem Gudbrandurem zahájí stavbu. Jakmile však budova stojí a obchodní dům se má již brzy otevřít, Sigurbjörnův dvanáctiletý syn je kýmsi vlákán dovnitř a sexuálně zneužit. Román vypráví, jak tato zničující událost prorůstá jako rakovina životy všech, kteří jsou jí dotčeni. Sigurbjörn postupně zpochybňuje svoji víru, vztahy s přáteli i své manželství a jeho svět se stále rychleji rozpadá. Když nakonec přijde i o práci, nezadržitelně se řítí do propasti šílenství.
