A major survey of Dame Laura Knight, first female Royal Academician and popular British artist of the 20th century.Laura Knight (1877–1970) was one of the most famous and popular English artists of the twentieth century. She was the first woman to have a solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, in 1965. In the following decades her realist style of painting fell out of fashion and her work become largely overlooked. A new generation has rediscovered her work, finding a contemporary resonance in her depictions of women at work, of people from marginalized communities and her contributions as a war artist.This beautifully illustrated book, which accompanies a major exhibition at MK Gallery, provides an overview of Knight's illustrious from her training at Nottingham Art School at the age of 13 and her time in North Yorkshire and Cornwall, to her visits to traveller communities and a segregated American hospital. It also features her circus, ballet and theatre scenes, paintings of women during the war and her late paintings of nature.The selection of over 160 works combines celebrated paintings with less known graphic and design works, including ceramics, jewellery and costumes that reflect the artist's enduring interest in the everyday activities of people from all walks of life.

Alfred Jarry's riotous, ground-breaking play, was a sensation upon first staging. This modern adaptation, which formed the basis of a short film, Roi, directed by acclaimed author, Neil Bartlett, brings a modernist classic to a contemporary audience.

The play features a satirical take on power dynamics, focusing on Ubu, who is manipulated by his wife into committing regicide. It parodies Shakespearean themes while employing absurd and juvenile dialogue to convey deeper meanings. As a precursor to the Theatre of the Absurd, it critiques the complacency and greed of the ruling class. Jarry's work is part of a trilogy exploring "pataphysics," showcasing his innovative style and solidifying his role in the modernist movement. W ramach międzynarodowego projektu Klasyka w powieści graficznej. Pilotażowy program nowej edukacji kulturalnej dla uczniów liceów oparty na powieściach graficznych, dofinansowanego ze środków programu Komisji Europejskiej Kulturalna Europa, trzy instytucje kultury - ze Słowenii (Słoweński Instytut Teatralny, Lublana), z Polski (Instytut Teatralny im. Zbigniewa Raszewskiego, Warszawa) oraz ze Słowacji (Instytut Teatralny, Bratysława) - wybrały trzy klasyczne dramaty europejskie: Antygonę Sofoklesa, Romea i Julię Williama Szekspira oraz Króla Ubu Alfreda Jarryego. Do współpracy zaproszono trzech uznanych artystów rysowników: dr. Horowitza (Ciril Horjak, Słowenia), Daniela Chmielewskiego (Polska) i Juraja Martikę (Słowacja), którzy stworzyli komiksowe inscenizacje tekstów dramatycznych. « Tout est dans Faustroll, affrmait Boris Vian, y compris la manière de cuire un mouton vivant jusqu’à la halte du cuit-à-point». Le Faustroll est le maître-livre d’Alfred Jarry. Au cours de sa navigation sur terre ferme, le savant docteur révèle au singe Bosse-de-Nage « qui ne savait de parole humaine que ha ha », à l’huissier Panmuphle qui consigne tout par écrit et au lecteur les plus singulières quintessences de la littérature, de l’art et de la science de son temps (l’ouvrage fut écrit en 1897-1898) et définit la Pataphysique, « science des solutions imaginaires » qui culmine dans le calcul de la surface de Dieu. Ainsi la Pataphysique, née avec Ubu parmi les garnements du lycée de Rennes, atteint-elle une dimension ubuniverselle. Fondée sur les deux manuscrits existants, révisée et mise à jour, cette édition propose un riche commentaire, avec documents illustrés, éclairant aussi bien les allusions à la vie littéraire de l’époque que la langue somptueuse de Jarry et ses emprunts à Rabelais ou aux grands scienti?ques, qu’il lisait assidûment. « Société de recherches savantes et inutiles », le Collège de Pataphysique, institué en 1948, a réuni ou réunit encore des esprits aussi originaux que Raymond Queneau, Marcel Duchamp, Ionesco ou Arrabal, mais aussi des érudits hors norme qui, entre autres, ont fondé les études jarryques.

Le 9 décembre 1896, un jeune homme crée le scandale en faisant jouer au théâtre de l’Œuvre une farce truculente : Ubu roi. « Merdre ! » Sitôt le premier mot lâché, la salle siffle, hue, rit, proteste : le public est insulté, les conventions théâtrales sont bousculées, le grotesque s’introduit dans le théâtre d’avant-garde. En mettant en scène les tribulations du Père Ubu – personnage cynique et ordurier, prêt à tout pour s’accaparer le pouvoir –, Jarry donne naissance à un véritable mythe. Blague de potache témoignant de l’inventivité d’un lycéen rennais ou « pamphlet philosophico-politique à gueule effrontée », selon le mot d’un journaliste d’alors, Ubu roi est d’abord un feu d’artifice verbal qui, plus d’un siècle après sa création, n’a rien perdu de sa saveur. Merdre ! C'est sur ce juron provocant et inattendu que s'ouvre Ubu roi , dont la premiere representation publique, en 1896, fait scandale. L'histoire de ce dictateur bouffon, devenu roi a la place du roi avec pour toute ambition de s'empiffrer et de s'enrichir, ne ressemble en effet a rien de connu. Parodiant Shakespeare et le drame historique, meprisant toutes les conventions theatrales, Jarry cree en Ubu un personnage inclassable, caricature de l'homme de pouvoir et symbole de la betise humaine... dont on ne sait trop s'il faut rire ou pleurer.

Le surmâle se distinguerait-il comme la plus moderne des visions mécaniciennes de l'amour ? à l'inverse de ce que prétendent la plupart, il ne s'agit nullement ici d'une exaltation de la mécanique amoureuse mais de sa critique sauvage, qui doit néanmoins sa radicalité au fait de ne jamais perdre de vue l'évidence ouvrant ce livre " l'amour est un acte sans importance puisqu'on peut le faire indéfiniment. "

Illustré par des dessins adéquats, le texte intégral de cette énorme comédie de 1896 qui traite de la férocité burlesque du pouvoir. "A partir de 12 ans", indique cette édition dans une collection Jeunesse. Voire.

Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) was the original transgressive author; the first word of his famous play Ubu Roi - "Shittr!" - changed the course of art and drama forever. Jarry's novels are equally outrageous, and the best of them are now again available in English. Where Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician is philosophical, The Supermale is carnal. Andre Marcueil, gentleman and scientist, has the ability to make love an infinite number of times in succession. Like a mock Jules Verne, Jarry describes the manner in which this Supermale proves his claim; after 82 times with a woman, attending doctors finally hook him up to a machine instead, with whom he merges in the book's - and the Supermale's - final climax. Barbara Wright's excellent translation, first published by New Directions, has been long out of print.

Méně známá próza tvůrce Otce Ubu tentokrát vypráví o vojenské zkušenosti autora. Text, nepostrádající humornou nadsázku, přechází z filozofického pojednání do básně i dramatu.

Mezi Jarryho druhé nejvýznamnější souborné dílo patřily Skutky a názory doktora Faustrolla, patafyzika, které bylo vydáno až posmrtně (na Jarryho přání, aby kniha vyšla až v době, která ji bude s to pochopit) a které patafyziku zobrazuje jako „vědu imaginárních výsledků“.

Spekulace vycházely v letech 1901–1902 v literárním čtrnáctideníku Bílá revue (La revue blanche). Výbor je doplněn několika texty ze satirického týdeníku Divoká kachna (Le Canard sauvage) a jednou ukázkou z italské revue Poesia. Souborné vydání Jarryho časopiseckých příspěvků vyšlo poprvé v roce 1911, toto vydání se opírá o reedici z roku 1969.

Divadelní hra Alfreda Jarryho Ubu králem, je považovaná za předchůdce absurdního dramatu, dada a surrealismu. Vznikla v roce 1885 jako studentská recese na gymnáziu v Rennes, utahující si z učitele fyziky Hébérta (vyslovovaného ébé, odtud ubu). V roce 1888 studenti uvedli ve svém loutkovém divadle frašku Poláci. Jarry hru později výrazně přepracoval a v roce 1896 proběhla skandální premiéra v divadle Théâtre de l´Ouvre v Paříži. Hlavním hrdinou je fiktivní polský tyran, který se zmocnil trůnu vraždou legitimního krále a nakonec byl vyhnán ze země. Jarry později dopsal ke hře řadu pokračování, jedním z nich je i hra Ubu spoutaný. Vychází v edici D jako 127. svazek.

Bibliofilské vydanie slávnej hry Alfreda Jaryho (1873-1907) s desiatimi originálnymi serigrafiami popredných slovenských výtvarníkov. Autor, kráľ mystifikácie a patafyziky, napísal toto dielo ako pätnásťročný študent, no zapísal sa ním do svetovej literatúry medzi takých autorov ako Cervantes či Hašek. Kniha bola ocenená ako Najkrajšia kniha Slovenska 1994.

Nadsamec je čtvrtá kniha spisovatele Alfreda Jarryho. Vyšla poprvé v roce 1902. I dnes je to ostrá a pichlavá satira na supermanství a nadlidství. Hlavní hrdina Ondřej Marcueil je muž, který zmůže, co se mu zamane. Ludvík Kundera v doslovu k českému vydání z roku 1968 píše: "Jarry tu předjímá totálně zautomatizovanou, bezcitně přetechnizovanou "moderní dobu" Chaplinovu a kypří půdu, z níž později vyrostou "mašinistické" dadaistické obrazy Ernstovy, Picabiovy a Duchampovy."

Nadsamec, zde je prostřednictvím hlavního hrdiny parodicky nahlíženo na uctívání kultu síly a „nadlidství“. Jarry v Nadsamci předběhl svou dobu o desítky let. Vytvořil předobraz všech supermanů dnešních dnů, a navíc dokázal tento moderní mýtus hloubkou svého pohledu jasnozřivě perziflovat.
