Psychoanalyzující výklad zkoumá čtyři případy zneužívání a týrání dětí, které se udály roku 1899 ve Vídni. Publikace věnovaná čtyřem případům týrání a zneužívání děti (případy Keplingerová, Hummel, Kučera, Marianek), jež vyvolaly velký dobový rozruch, avšak záhy byly zapomenuty. Byl však odhalen "syndrom zbitého dítěte", který se stal východiskem pro medicínský, psychologický a sociologický výzkum týrání dětí. V dějinách společenského uvědomování to byl mezník, avšak sociální důsledky byly naneštěstí omezené. Neboť i když dnes umíme přijmout existenci týrání dětí jako syndrom, i když jej umíme v jednotlivých případech diagnostikovat, zůstáváme nad touto tragédií téměř bezradní. Dítě je buď ponecháno týrajícím rodičům a naděje je vkládána do poradenství či podpory rodiny, nebo je od rodičů separováno a předáno do pěstounské péče.
