David Livingstone gilt als einer der bedeutendsten britischen Entdecker sowie entschiedener Gegner des Sklavenhandels. Er machte eine bemerkenswerte Karriere, indem er aus armen Verhältnissen zum Forscher und Mediziner aufstieg und in drei abenteuerlichen Reisen Afrika erkundete. Das erste Mal brach er als Missionar auf, seine dritte Reise startete er 1865 als Expedition, um die Quelle des Nils zu finden. Er entdeckte als erster Europäer den Ngamisee im Norden des ehemaligen Betschuanalandes, erforschte in einem 4000 Kilometer langen Marsch bis nach Luanda den oberen Sambesi, brach von dort zu einer Expedition quer durch den Kontinent zur Ostküste auf und stieß endlich auf die von ihm nach der Queen benannten Victoria-Fälle. Als Livingstone starb, begleiteten über 60 seiner afrikanischen Weggefährten den Leichnam auf einer neunmonatigen Reise nach Sansibar, von wo er nach England gebracht wurde. In der postkolonialen Forschung kritischer betrachtet, wird Livingstones Bedeutung dennoch bis heute geschätzt.

Je to velmi bezprostřední text, v němž cestovatel, misionář a bojovník proti obchodu s otroky líčí nejen své cesty, ale i lidi, s nimiž se setkal, zvyky místních kmenů a jejich reakce na jeho misionářské úsilí. Věnuje se také rostlinám, zvykům různých zvířat, chorobám, na něž narazil, a dokonce i geologii míst, která navštívil. Jeho snahou je představit jižní Afriku možným kolonistům, kteří by ji „civilizovali“. Sám stojí v pozadí: jen čas od času se zmíní o záchvatech horečky, které ho vysilovaly, nebo o problémech s poštou. Přesto z textu vyvstává pozoruhodný, odvážný a sympatický muž, který svůj život zasvětil nesmírně náročné misi.
