Podtitul: K historii a patologii dvou odvětví literárního braku. Kniha zesnulého významného literárního vědce profesora Josefa Hrabáka sleduje vývoj brakové literatury u nás v oblasti „lidové“ literatury (lidových kalendářů a ženské četby) od hororu od minulého století po současnost v kontextu světové produkce. Vychází nejen z českých materiálů, ale také z překladů cizí triviální literatury (především německé) do češtiny a v poúnorové době z cizích originálů. Blíže se zabývá současnou produkcí pokleslé literatury v NSR a v Anglii. U nás je to práce vpravdě průkopnická, česká literární věda se zatím touto oblastí blíže nezabývala (kromě knihy prof. Hrabáka Napínavá četba pod lupou, kterou napsal pro nakladatelství Československý spisovatel a v níž se soustředil na detektivní a dobrodružnou). Ve své nové práci přibližuje autor čtenářům brakovou literární produkci, která vycházela v nejrůznějších lidových kalendářích, v knihách tzv. ženské četby, a konečně žánr hororu množstvím kratších a delších ukázek, jež rozebírá a kriticky hodnotí. Přehledně a čtivě seznamuje s „historií a patologií dvou odvětví literárního braku“, naznačuje společenské kořeny, vznik a vývoj této četby, která čtenáře podbízivým stylem a zkreslováním reálna dezorientuje a odvádí od životní skutečnosti.

Kniha o literatuře, jejímž cílem je uvést čtenáře do způsobu, jak kulturně číst, jak literatuře rozumět a jak ji hodnotit. Seznamuje se základními pojmy liteární teorie, ozřejmuje vztah mezi tvůrcem, dobou a jeho dílem.
