José Ángel Valente

José Ángel Valente was a Spanish poet, essayist, and translator whose work is characterized by a profound essentialism and a mystical undertone. His poetry draws from a multitude of spiritual traditions, including Jewish Kabbalah, Sufism, and Christian mysticism, without adhering to dogma. Valente explored the depths of memory, both personal and collective, and the essence of language itself. As an essayist, he delved into reflections on art, being, and the origins of life, creating some of the most ambitious and profound works in contemporary Spanish literature. His extensive translations of poetry introduced readers to a diverse range of voices.
