Girolamo Savonarola

This Italian Dominican friar and preacher came to prominence in Renaissance Florence, known for his prophecies of civic glory and calls for Christian renewal. He denounced clerical corruption, despotic rule, and the exploitation of the poor, foretelling a biblical flood and a new Cyrus from the north to reform the Church. When the French king invaded Italy, his prophecies seemed on the verge of fulfillment, leading Florentines to expel the ruling Medici and establish a republic, with Florence declared the New Jerusalem and center of Christianity. He instituted an extreme puritanical campaign, but defiance of the Pope led to his excommunication, a failed trial by fire, and ultimately his condemnation and execution.
