Knižní předloha úspěšného filmu – strhující román o poslední jízdě jedné hvězdy rodeaMike má nejlepší roky za sebou. Bývaly doby, kdy v aréně nejezdil nikdo lepší, ovšem rozvod a roky drsného života mu vyčerpaly tělo. Po jedné nehodě musí náhle ukončit kariéru, ale šéf mu přidělí ještě poslední úkol: překročit hranici Mexika a unést šéfova syna Rafa od jeho exmanželky, aby šéf získal převahu ve vleklém rozvodovém řízení.Když Mike dorazí na místo, zjistí, že kluk už utekl, a jeho plán okamžitě odhalí místní policie. Nakonec kovboj Rafa v ulicích Mexico City najde – potlouká se tam a živí se drobnými krádežemi a občasnou výhrou v kohoutích zápasech. Mike přesvědčí chlapce, aby se vrátil do Texasu a oba uprchlíci před zákonem tak vyrazí na cestu na sever. Rozvine se mezi nimi nepravděpodobné přátelství, které je nutí zúčtovat se životními volbami učiněnými v zájmu toho zůstat „macho“.

Je psána na motiv lidské nenávisti, která je možná jen v kapitalistické společnosti a opřena o majetkové a mocenské prostředky bezohledně ničí milostný cit. Ústřední linií děje je hon na člověka, prosťáčka čistého srdce, jenž vyrostl, aniž se ho dotkla vlčí morálka okolního světa, a dráždí jej právě svou dobrotou a bezelstností, nechtěně, a proto tím pronikavěji odhalující zlo v člověku i společnosti.
