Krystyna Żywulska's book is a shocking testimony capturing the tormenting life of the death camp day by day. Even after the passing years, the reader's experience of the account through the eyes of eyewitnesses and victims of the Holocaust remains incredible. The author survived months of hunger in the Warsaw ghetto and then, from 1943, her time in the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps—until her escape from the death march during the camp's liquidation.
