Cílem mezinárodního badatelského týmu, který spojil své síly k vytvoření této obsáhlé publikace, bylo představit bohaté staroegyptské památky v rozličných podobách. Historické časové rozpětí přitom zahrnuje dobu od prehistorie až k Řecko-římské epoše. Vedle už zmíněných uměleckých a stavebních památek pokrývá tato kniha také celou řadu témat z oblasti hmotné kultury, organizace a fungování státu a náboženství. Texty doprovází více než 800 špičkových fotografií, barevných vyobrazení, map a nákresů, takže se před našima očima zjevuje diferencovaný, a zároveň velmi živý a pestrý obraz tohoto dávno zaniklého světa.
