Weihnachten ist das in der gesamten westlichen Welt am meisten gefeierte Fest. Es gehört nicht nur zu den Hauptfesten des Christentums, sondern ist auch fester Bestandteil der abendländischen Kultur. Welches sind nun die Wurzeln dieses Festes ? Was ereignete sich damals in Palästina und was wollten die Evangelien über die Geburt Jesu in Bethlehem aussagen? Die sehr unterschiedlichen Berichte des Matthäus- und Lukasevangeliums werden hinsichtlich der Frage dargestellt, wie historische Auskünfte in die theologische Aussageabsicht der Evangelien eingeflochten wurden. Dabei führen immer wieder Spuren ins Alte Testament. Die meisten Symbole der Weihnachtszeit entstammen überraschenderweise diesem Teil der Bibel. Doch auch die Umwelt der frühen Christenheit hat in der Ausgestaltung des Weihnachtsfestes Spuren hinterlassen. Das christliche Fest fand seine Form an der Seite und in Abgrenzung zum römischen Kaiserkult. Seit dem vierten Jahrhundert entwickelte sich eine vielgestaltige Weihnachtstradition. Diese hat unter anderem eine reiche künstlerische Gestaltung angeregt, die in einem Beitrag ebenfalls untersucht wird

Seit dem 2. Jh. entwickelt sich in England das Christentum. Der erste König war ein getaufter Wikinger. Die Normannen bauten Kathedralen und Klöster. Jahrhunderte waren geprägt von Streit und konstruktiven Diskussionen: Das Verhältnis von politischer und religiöser Macht gehörte zu den Grundfragen. In diesen Jahrhunderten entstanden großartige Werke der Literatur und die berühmten Bibelausgaben wie die King James Bible. Scharfsinnige theologische Überlegungen vonMenschen wie Anselm von Canterbury oder Thomas More berührten auch das europäische Festland und wurden gemeinsam vorangetrieben. Und immer wieder gab es Frauen und Männer, die als Vorbilder und auch Märtyrer dem Christentum Gesicht verliehen. Und bis heute erhält die Kirche von der britischen Insel neue Impulse.
