John Tyrrell se detailně věnuje skladatelovu vrcholnému tvůrčímu období. Jsou zde zpracována témata vztahující se ke vzniku oper Výlety páně Broučkovy, Káťa Kabanová, Příběhy lišky Bystroušky, Věc Makropulos a Z mrtvého domu a dále například děl jako Taras Bulba, Sinfonietta či Mša glagolskaja. Druhý svazek monografie také detailně popisuje Janáčkovu životní etapu označovanou jako „velké stáří“ a mapuje i jeho postoje ke vzniku svobodného státu či k současnému umění. Tyrrell čtivě mapuje skladatelův život a tvorbu až do jeho šedesátých narozenin, tedy do roku 1914. Detailně se věnuje Janáčkovu soukromému životu, jeho studiu, kariéře učitele, klavíristy a sbormistra a sleduje také jeho kulturní snahy v převážně německém Brně. Zabývá se Janáčkovými skladatelskými počátky a jeho kompozičním vývojem a také podrobnou genezí řady jeho děl. Do textu jsou vřazeny oddíly zaměřené na různá témata, například Janáčkův poměr k panslavismu, Janáček jako hudební etnograf či učitel nebo kapitoly mapující skladatelův vztah k různým osobnostem, jako je Pavel Křížkovský, Antonín Dvořák či Zdeněk Nejedlý.
