      M. Nijhoffs Nieuwe gedichten is met zijn schijnbaar weinig zeggende titel een van de veelbetekenendste bundels in de Nederlandse poëzie. Hoe belangrijk de dichter zelf de bundel heeft gevonden, blijkt wel uit de veranderingen, die hij in druk na druk heeft aangebracht; nog in de tekst van zijn Verzameld werk , door zijn dood definitief, zit een wijziging. Deze negende druk behelst de laatste versie. Nieuwe gedichten is een hoogtepunt van 'gewone' taal met zo grote intensiteit, dat de 'geheimen' nog altijd uitdagingen aan de lezers zijn. Dat voorbeeld over 'Awataer' nog altijd geschreven wordt, bewijst wel de betekenis van Nieuwe gedichten .
