A chance road trip with a high school acquaintance sparked the idea for his book, an experience he felt was uniquely suited for literary exploration. He also conceived the book as a way to offer a spiritual foundation he couldn't provide his daughter, having disassociated from religion early in life. The author later relocated from Los Angeles to Vancouver, British Columbia.
