Oba autoři mají bohaté vědecké a pedagogické zkušenosti. Herman F. Mark, zpočátku profesor na rakouských a německých universitách, je jedním z předních zakladatelů makromolekulární chemie. Rozebírají stereospecifické polymerace olefinů, dienů a dalších vinylových sloučenin, jejichž produktem jsou polymery s vysoce pravidelným prostorovým uspořádáním, polymeraci s katalyzátory Zieglerova typu, s kovovým lithiem, organo-lithnými sloučeninami, kysličníky kovů a četnými dalšími organo-kovovými sloučeninami. Vzniklé polymery jsou charakterizovány podle fyzikálních a chemických vlastností. Z amerického originálu přeložil kolektiv autorů, předmluvu napsal Giulio Natta.
