Georg Ernst Stahl

    October 21, 1659 – May 14, 1734

Georg Ernst Stahl was a German physician, chemist, and philosopher known for his advocacy of vitalism. Stahl posited that living organisms are governed by an anima, or soul, which actively delays the natural tendency toward decomposition. In chemistry, while acknowledging atomic theory, he argued that purely mechanistic views were insufficient to explain chemical processes. His most notable contribution was the theory of phlogiston, which served as a crucial transition between alchemy and modern chemistry.
