Ever since the birth of architecture the domestic garden has played a key role in defining a home. The large, ostentatious gardens of the nobility, now converted into urban parks, were echoed on a smaller scale by attempts to reproduce a piece of nature and incorporate it into a structured living environment. A series of innovative interpretations of the domestic landscape has led to an enormous range of patios, terraces and gardens, all of which are illustrated here in hundreds of photographs (with floor plans included) that enable the reader to investigate the present-day function and form of these spaces all over the world. With contributions from renowned architects and landscape gardeners, this book serves as a useful introduction to the ideas that have inspired the design of the modern garden and to the forms and materials that have made it unique.

    • If you think a flight of stairs is nothing more than a means of getting from one floor to the next, think again. Shot from intriguing angles that illustrate their utility and beauty, this colorful tour of stepping spaces reveals why staircases are not only the architect’s ultimate challenge, but also the ultimate manifestation of his ingenuity, imagination, and engineering skills. In one family houses and multiple dwellings, in schools, museums, and sports arenas, in restaurants, offices, and retail shops, these stairs, escalators, and even fire escapes are made of every material wood, natural stone, bricks, reinforced concrete, metal, and even glass. From one floor to the next they show how the best staircases are spiritually—as well as physically—transporting.

    • The bathroom is probably one of the rooms that has changed most over a short period of time. Until fairly recently, it was a room that was regarded as unimportant and its organization and decoration was neglected. Nowadays, however, bathrooms have come into their own and are seen as indispensable focal points, not just spaces exclusively given over to personal hygiene. They have become veritable temples to pleasure and relaxation, where relaxing in a bubble-bath or a jacuzzi or working out in a small gym and reveling in the delight of feeling fit are the order of the day. Changes in habits and needs have helped to give bathrooms a starring role that until only recently was out of the question. This beautifully designed book examines the transformation of this room by presenting a brief overview of its history, evolution and stylistic features. Specific practical examples show readers how architects and interior decorators approach the design of the latest, most modern bathrooms.
