John Caldwell Calhoun

John C. Calhoun was a leading politician and political theorist from South Carolina in the first half of the 19th century. He was known for his intense and original defense of slavery as a positive good, and for his theory of minority rights in a democracy. His political views evolved from early nationalism to advocating for states' rights, and he guided the South toward secession from the Union.
