Human slavery, a persistent issue since ancient times, continues today under the guise of "modern-day slavery," known as "human trafficking." This crime ranks among the top three most lucrative organized crimes, alongside weapon and drug trafficking. It affects every country, regardless of development status. The International Labour Organization (ILO) reported in 2012 that nearly 21 million people are trapped in forced labor, including commercial sexual exploitation. The New Haven School of Jurisprudence aims to tackle this pressing issue by addressing its public health implications, focusing on prevention, prosecution of offenders, and the protection and reintegration of victims. The school advocates for a comprehensive investigation of the social conflicts surrounding human trafficking to devise effective, tailored solutions. This booklet stems from the Spring School on Public Health, Human Trafficking and the Law, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of an ERASMUS INTENSIVE PROGRAMME held in March 2013 in Siena, Italy. The program sought to analyze human trafficking through the lens of public health and European law, fostering collaboration among students and experts in medicine, social sciences, and law. Thieme, an award-winning international medical publisher, is committed to delivering high-quality content and presentation in all its publications.
