Shen Congwen

    December 28, 1902 – May 10, 1988

Shen Congwen stands among the greatest modern Chinese writers, on par with Lu Xun. Regional culture and identity play a more significant role in his writing than in that of other major early modern Chinese authors. Shen was known for masterfully combining the vernacular style with classical Chinese writing techniques. He is considered the most important exponent of "native soil" literature in modern China.

The granddaughter of a poor ferryman, Cuicui grows up in Chadong, a small town in China's exotic southwestern frontier, where she is sheltered from the warlord fighting that was prevalent in China in the 1920s. She's caught up in the spell of the local custom of nighttime serenades, but she is also haunted by her grandfather's imminent death.
