The design of urban public spaces is fundamentally based on conceiving the best possible accommodation for people and achieving an optimal configuration aimed at providing a place for leisure, a haven for contemplation and rest, or an ideal meeting point. In recent years, this branch of design has experienced impressive development, and there has been a noticeable increase in the level of sophistication and the variety of resources employed by architects and landscape designers when projecting the common outdoor spaces we see being built today.

This book explores installations that are notable for their creative and sensitive design, planning, or management of the landscape. The small- to medium-scale featured projects aim to promote interaction between people and the environment by responding to a broad range of human habitats and natural ecosystems in diverse social, cultural and ecological contexts. In their response to their context these projects evolve into Land Art, which can be understood as a fusion between sculpture, architecture, and landscape architecture.
