Georg Brandes

    February 4, 1842 – February 19, 1927

Georg Brandes was a Danish critic and scholar who significantly influenced Scandinavian and European literature. He is considered the chief theorist behind the "Modern Breakthrough" in Scandinavian culture. Brandes advocated for literary realism and naturalism, rejecting excessive aestheticism and fantasy. He believed literature should serve as an organ of "the great thoughts of liberty and the progress of humanity."
