Izumi Kasai a jeho matka Juriko mají mezi sebou nepsanou dohodu – i kdyby se po celých dvanáct měsíců neviděli, poslední noc v roce oslaví společně. Jenže něco je jinak, Juriko se chová divně a Izumimu postupně dochází, že jeho matka bojuje s neviditelným nepřítelem, proti kterému nemá nejmenší šanci. Teď je na něm, aby Juriko bezpečně provedl světem, který jí přestal dávat smysl, a zároveň ochránil jejich společné vzpomínky. Úkol je to však nelehký, a to nejen proto, že musí zároveň řešit složitou pracovní situaci i blížící se narození prvního dítěte, ale také kvůli slepému místu ve vlastní minulosti, které v jeho vztahu s matkou představuje bolestivý otazník. Dojemný příběh o synovi a matce stižené Alzheimerovou chorobou realisticky vykresluje smutek nad pomalou ztrátou milovaného člověka, ale zároveň přináší jedinečný pohled na to, jak paměť a vzpomínky formují naši osobnost a život.
