Édouard Dujardin Book order (chronological)

Het leven van een dandy-achtige, met zijn platonische ideeen worstelende student in de rechten aan het einde van de 19de eeuw. Edouard Dujardin was dichter, romancier, toneelschrijver en essayist (1861-1949). Eigenlijk een gewone liefdesgeschiedenis, maar dan met veel nuance en subtiliteit in de verf gezet, waardoor het gehele verhaal iets bijzonders krijgt, iets dat deze "ordinaire" geschiedenis boven het alledaagse uittilt. Een boek, typisch voor literaire fijnproevers, nadat alle andere soort-gelijke liefdesgeschiedenissen reeds vaal geworden zijn. Dit boek is het enige van Dujardin dat in de Franse literatuur een zekere naam gehouden heeft. Het mag al verbazingwekkend heten dat deze weinig bekende roman in het Nederlands vertaald is. A delightful period piece of Paris in the late 1880’s, We’ll to the Woods No More ( Les lauriers sont coupés ) retains its importance as the first use of the monologue intérieur and the inspiration for the stream-of-consciousness technique perfected by James Joyce. Dujardin’s charming tale, told with insight and irony, recounts what goes on in the mind of a young man-about-town in love with a Parisian actress. Mallarmé described the poetry of the telling as "the instant seized by the throat." Originally published in France in 1887, the first English translation (by Joyce scholar Stuart Gilbert) was published by New Directions in 1938. In 1957 Leon Edel’s perceptive historical essay reintroduced the book as "the rare and beautiful case of a minor work which launched a major movement."

Milostný příběh odehrávající se v Paříži koncem minulého století. Knížka je především významná tím, že její autor v ní poprvé v historii literatury, 30 let před Jamesem Joycem, použil formy vnitřního monologu. Čtenář sleduje hlavního hrdinu, bohémského studenta, samolibého a bojácného, v jeho snažení o citové sblížení s krásnou zhýčkanou herečkou. Vyprávění je plné skrytého humoru a ironie k romantickému hrdinovi, který tak mistrně lže sám sobě.
