Volkov's continuation of his Oz/Magic Land series presents a captivating tale set in an underground kingdom beneath Munchkin Land. The story begins with the creation of Magic Land by the giant magician Hurricap, who made a realm where animals could speak, surrounded by a treacherous desert and mountains. This underground kingdom once thrived under the rule of seven kings who alternated their reign monthly, each with their own courtiers and spies. A spring with soporific water, reminiscent of the Fountain of Oblivion, was discovered, causing those who drank from it to forget their past upon waking. The kings decided to sleep through each other's reigns, but when the spring was damaged, they all awoke simultaneously. Ellie, along with her cousin Fred Canning, becomes trapped in this kingdom, and the kings demand her assistance to restore the spring using her fairy magic. With the help of Strasheela and some engineers, the spring is repaired, allowing the kings to sleep again. However, when they awaken, they find themselves transformed into ordinary citizens, leading to the establishment of a republic. In the end, Ramina, Queen of the Field Mice, informs Ellie that she will never return to Magic Land.
