Das Thema Krise der lokalen Kulturen und die philosophische Suche nach Identität fordert zu allererst eine Bestandsaufnahme politischer Kulturen hinsichtlich ihres Staatsverständnisses und deren Voraussetzungen zur Identifikation mit dem jeweiligen Staat. Die zweite Forderung richtet sich an die Philosophie und fragt nach konkreten Wegen für eine Gemeinsamkeit, deren Basis Freiheit ist, nicht trotz sondern um der Verschiedenheit des Herkommens und des Denkens willen. Erstaunlich ist, dass eine Tagung zu diesem Thema, weniger wegen der unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen und nationalen Erfahrungen der russischen und deutschen Wissenschaftler, sondern eher wegen der oft kontroversen Zugänge verschiedener Fachdisziplinen Fragen aufwirft.

This book provides an English translation of philosopher Heimo Hofmeister s book, Der Wille zum Krieg, oder die Ohnmacht der Politik, which traces the connection between war and the individual or groupawareness of differences among others which leads to inevitable and serious disagreement. Analyzing the relations of strength, force and power on the one hand and state, politics and war on the other, Hofmeister shows that while conflict is inevitable, war is not. Ironically, the same diversity that exists among humanity and the conflicts that arise from the awareness of such are just as much the foundation of harmony, friendship and love as they are that of war and hate.

Dr. Heimo Hofmeister is the Chair of Philosophy in the Protestant Theology Faculty at the University of Heidgelberg, and has twice served as the Dean of that faculty. One of the most significant figures in contemporary German philosophy and ethics, he has recently published landmark works in medical ethics and the nature of warfare. A Russian translation of this book has already been published in 2000 and a second edition in German came out at the same time, and is almost sold out. This is the much awaited, first English translation of Dr. Heimo Hofmeister's groundbreaking work.

On the one hand, the philosopher of religion may not assume this self-understanding in order to avoid offering a religious theory (a theology) instead of the philosophical theory expected from him. On the other hand, he cannot by-pass religious self-understanding because this is the key to insight into the uniqueness of religious discourse.
