This comprehensive reference work on medieval German literature is essential for all medieval disciplines, including the history of medicine. It documents the current state of research and highlights the evolution of research methods through the changes in articles from Vol. 1 to Vol. 11, underscoring its historical significance for the field. Since its first volume was published in 1978, it has had a lasting impact on medieval studies, particularly in the way it presents the transmission of literary works. With around 5000 alphabetically arranged articles, the 'Dictionary of Authors' encompasses the entirety of medieval German literature. Building on the first edition (1933-1955), this updated version has been thoroughly revised by international scholars to reflect the present state of research. The term 'literature' here includes all forms of writing except archival records, covering not just 'belles-lettres' but also practical, ecclesiastical, legal, historical, scientific, medical, technical, and commercial texts. The dictionary features all known German authors and their works, a selection of Latin authors from the German-speaking region, and prominent anonymous works. Less well-known German anonymous texts are included in articles on manuscript collections and thematic overviews, with a strong emphasis on the transmission of these works throughout history.
