Termín pochází z latinského „osvícení“ a byl přivlastněn mnoha skupinami, které často měly gnostické texty nebo tajné informace. Hnutí volnomyšlenkářů, nejradikálnější odnož osvícenců, bylo založeno 1. května 1776 na universitě v Ingolstadtu. Jeho symbolem se stala sova bohyně Minervy. Adam Weishaupt, filozof a církevní advokát, chtěl čelit dominanci jezuitů a nabídl intelektuální alternativu k zednářským lóžím. Skupina byla také nazývána Řádem Iluminátů a bavorskými Ilumináty. Po nástupu Karla II. Teodora v roce 1777, který zakázal všechny tajné společnosti, včetně Iluminátů, se Weishauptovy aktivity přesunuly do ilegality. Římský klub je globální think tank, který byl založen v dubnu 1968 a celosvětovou pozornost získal v roce 1972 svou první zprávou Meze růstu (Limits to Growth). Římský klub o sobě uvádí, že je "organizací jednotlivců, kteří sdílejí společný zájem o budoucnost lidstva a usilují o změnu. Naším posláním je podporovat porozumění globálním výzvám, kterým čelí lidstvo a navrhovat řešení prostřednictvím vědecké analýzy, komunikace a jejich prosazování."Členy jsou známé a respektované osobnosti v disciplínách, které jsou pro poslání klubu relevantní, jako je sociální rozvoj, ekonomika a životní prostředí. Mezi členy jsou významní vědci, špičkoví podnikatelé, bývalí politici a bývalé hlavy států, jejichž společným zájmem je budoucnost lidstva a diskutují o hlavních globálních problémech a výzvách.
