In den eindringlichen, einfühlsamen Bildern des 1897 bei St. Petersburg geborenen Fotografen Roman Vishniac werden die Menschen der ostjüdischen Schtetl noch einmal lebendig. 1935 wurde Vishniac vom "Hilfsverein der deutschen Juden" gebeten, das traditionelle jüdische Leben in Osteuropa zu dokumentieren. Zwischen 1936 und 1939 reiste er Tausende von Kilometern durch Polen, Weißrußland, Ungarn, die Slowakei, das Baltikum. Mit versteckter Kamera machte er über 16 000 Aufnahmen. Nur rund 2000 Negative konnte er vor der Beschlagnahmung und Vernichtung bewahren.
