"Johann Jakob von Tschudi (1818 - 1889) aus Glarus ist einer der großen Schweizer Naturforscher und Gelehrten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Nach der Rückkehr von seiner ersten Perureise ließ sich Tschudi 1845 in Wien nieder, wo er bis zu seinem Lebensende blieb. Hier erlebte er die stürmischen Oktobertage der Revolution von 1848. Als Augenzeuge gibt er in seiner 1849 erschienenen Schrift 'Wiens Oktobertage' eine in tagebuchartiger Form abgefaßte Darstellung der Ereignisse. Im Anhang sind 163 Originaldokumente abgedruckt - Texte von Manifesten und Proklamationen, Flugblättern und Maueranschlägen, die aneinandergereiht eine unbestechliche Quelle bilden.
