Richard Knötel

    January 12, 1857 – April 26, 1914

Richard Knötel was a German artist and illustrator renowned for his detailed military scenes. He is recognized as a pioneering scholar in the study of military uniform history. His extensive body of work and illustrations continue to be invaluable resources today, serving not only historical research but also providing essential source material for costuming in theatrical and film productions. To distinguish his art from that of his son, who also became an artist and illustrator, Knötel often signed his work "Knötel d. Ä," meaning "Knötel the elder."
