Richard Knötel was a German artist and illustrator renowned for his detailed military scenes. He is recognized as a pioneering scholar in the study of military uniform history. To distinguish his art from that of his son, who also became an artist and illustrator, Knötel often signed his work "Knötel d. Ä," meaning "Knötel the elder."
